Decorating your kitchen
A fun and easy trick for decorating a Kitchen window sill is to go to the garden center or florist and buy three small terracotta containers and trays (4 to 5 inch) which will hold a 2 inch plastic pot of herbs. The 2 inch herb pots can be purchased at most large supermarkets when doing your weekly shopping at a very affordable price. Plop the plastic pots into the terracotta pots and water daily. You can now pinch off small pieces to use in recipes when cooking or fresh in salads.
- Be sure to choose herbs you will use regularly. If you will only use one type of herb then only buy that herb.
- Replace the herb pots as needed. (This will vary according to your own use.
Readily available in most supermarkets and garden centers are Thyme, Basil, Rosemary, Sage, Chives, Marjoram, Catnip, Parsley, and Cilantro. Fresh herbs, more flavorful than their dried counterparts, dramatically improve the quality of the food you prepare. Don't overlook using a small blooming plant such as a dianthus, violet, marigold which are also available for a buck or two and will do well on the window sill. If you plan correctly you can use herb seeds which you plant in rotation in small pots on the patio at intervals so that you can keep a fresh pot of herbs in the kitchen rotating the older pots to the patio for replanting.
Once you find the importance of fresh herbs and begin to use them on a regular basis you will certainly need to plant a larger pot (Strawberry pots work well for this) or collection of pots and place them outside in a sunny location. We always keep several herb pots about the house and find the fresh clippings are delightful in many of our meals.
